Friends Central was able to weather a first quarter injury to standout forward Amile Jefferson to win their fourth straight Pennslyvania Independent School Athletic Association title. The Phoenix knocked off Friends School League rival Westtown 66-47 thanks to some outstanding 3-point shooting.
Friends hit 10-of-23 from long range, including four from Billy Cassidy who scored a game-high 19 points in the victory. Conrad Chambers hit three on his way to 19 points and Karonn Davis continued to play well, scoring 10 points and adding 6 rebounds.
Jefferson, who hurt his ankle in the first quarter, battled the entire game, notching a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
“I could see he was limping, but there was no way he was going to let me put him on the bench,” [coach Jason] Polykoff said.
Villanova-bound Daniel Ochefu led the way for Westtown, scoring 16 points in the loss.
Westtown had beaten Friends twice already this season, including the FSL semi-final.
Cassidy and Jefferson keyed a 7-0 run to start a fourth quarter in which Friends outscored Westtown 26-17.
Friends finishes the season with a record of 22-5.
Jefferson is expected to make a decision at some point in the next few weeks. Duke, NC State, and Villanova have been the most frequently heard names around the versatile forward.
