Findlay College Prep star Winston Shepard has announced today that he will be attending San Diego State University. Shepard, who had also been considering New Mexico, landed on SDSU thanks to what he feels will be a great fit.
Shepard is now the highest rated player to ever commit to San Diego State, out-rating players like current San Antonio Spur Kawhi Leonard. A versatile player at 6-foot-9, Shepard is a very similar player to Leonard and should fit in well with Steve Fisher’s system.
Leonard echoed that to Mark Zeigler of the San Deigo Union-Tribune.
“I just felt comfortable with Coach Fisher and the staff,” Shepard said by phone from Las Vegas. “I had a great visit. I could really see myself fitting it with the guys. The things that I do best I felt like would fit in – ballhandling, passing, playing multiple positions, attacking the rim.
“It’s a great fit.”
Shepard is joining a team that is currently ranked in the top 25 but lost just last night to New Mexico. Fisher has had this team on quite a run for some time and adding a player like Shepard will do nothing but ensure more success.
I see him filling that 3/4 slot that Leonard played under Fisher and possibly even doing so more effectively. The similarities between the two players are uncanny.
Shepard is now the second player from our Unsigned Stars series to come off the board, joining Ricardo Gathers.
